Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center

Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, Washburn, ND

An experience dealing with the enlightenment’s idea of using the scientific method to reveal the laws of nature and human society and how it inspired Thomas Jefferson to create the Lewis and Clark expedition.

That is the underlying theme of this 11,000 square foot interpretive center in Washburn North Dakota.  In conjunction with exhibit design and fabrication firm Taylor Studios, Eidson designed the interactive, created content and integrated control, media and lighting for three of the exhibit components in this large scale project.  The three components included a 15 foot column displaying the supplies necessary for survival and taken for diplomacy and trade; an object theater telling the story of the commissioning of Meriwether Lewis by Thomas Jefferson and the massive preparation that Lewis underwent to command such a successful expedition; and an interactive audio exhibit displaying the importance of journaling and reporting to the corps of discovery by experiencing audio samples of actual journal entries from the expedition.

Little known to most, Lewis attributes the true success of the entire mission on the Girandoni multi-shot air rifle of which one is displayed within the exhibit.
